It’s that time again… to help us out by eating at Rubio’s! Eat at Rubio’s (the UCLA one, in Ackerman) on Wednesday, May 1st, between 2PM and close, and present this flyer, and they’ll donate 20% of the price of your meal to the University Lutheran Chapel! So grab a flyer, print it out, and head over to Rubio’s for some fish tacos (or whatever tickles your fancy)!

Taking Sexton Applications! (until 4/28)

We are taking applications for sextons to live here for the summer 2013 and/or 2013-14 school year and/or summer 2014.

Wondering what the sexton program is? The University Lutheran Chapel sexton program is a sort of co-op situation whereby sextons (young people interested in living in a Christian co-op situation and, generally, UCLA undergraduates) live at the chapel in exchange for eight hours of volunteer work per week and a small monthly donation for utilities. Sextons also attend a specified number of events (services & bible studies, generally) per academic quarter.

And what do the sextons do? They, in large part, run the chapel! We need people to help with everything from checking email to maintaining the building, from planting flowers to planning events, and everything in between. With respect to the work expected of you, the best fit is a person who has particular skills to offer that he/she is proud of (e.g. music, artistic skills, people skills) and also is open to learning to do a variety of new tasks as needed.

To learn even more about the sexton program please visit the Sexton Program portion of our website and read the sexton manual. Make sure you are comfortable with the requirements set forth in the manual before you apply. The application is on that page as well.

DEADLINE & TIMELINE:

Final date/time to submit an application: Midnight Sunday April 28th. Interviews: Monday Apr. 29th through Sunday May 6th, in the library here at the chapel. Notification of acceptance: Via email, by Friday, May 10th. Note that phone interviews are possible for students who are, e.g., currently living abroad or out-of-state.

Lutheran Campus Ministries @USC has invited us on their Mission Trip! What a blessing to serve with our brothers and sisters at USC =)

This year they are teaming up with First Lutheran Church in Torrance and traveling to Tecate, Mexico. We will be serving through the Rancho San Juan Bosco Retreat Center and Orphanage. Many groups go to that center to work in the orphanage or do other projects for the center and the people of the community.

We would love for you to come serve with us from Friday, April 12th to Sunday, April 14th.

Deadline to register: March 13

You just need
-a valid passport
-registration form [page 1] [page 2]
-$125 to pay for accommodations, food, and travel expenses
-a desire to serve!

Departure time will be sometime Friday 4/12 in the am. But wait, there will be shuttles for those who cannot leave till later that day! More info TBA.

Signature A Capella Concert: March 6th

ULC is proud to announce that we’ll be hosting UCLA’s excellent all-female a cappella group Signature A Cappella on Wednesday, March 6th, at 8:00 PM. (See facebook event here.) Best of all? The concert is FREE. So please come on over and let these lovely ladies serenade you so you can forget about papers and final exams for a bit! In the mean time, you can go to their website to learn more about them.

To find the concert, come to 10915 Strathmore Drive and go up, up, up until you find the big blue doors at the top of the winding driveway. No parking available, sorry.

Evangelism Class in Capistrano Beach

Pastor Mark Jasa will be leading an evangelism class (“ground school” lectures) at Faith Lutheran Church (34381 Calle Portola, Capistrano Beach, California) on Saturday, February 16th. The lecture takes place in iTrust Hall from 9am to 12pm. The purpose is to train attendees to share their faith with others effectively, and Pastor Jasa will covers topics as such as:

Fundraiser at Rubio’s

Swing by Rubio’s (menu with prices available here) on Wednesday, January 16^th, between 2 pm and close (9 pm), and bring this flyer, and 20% of the sale will go to us! All of the money collected will go toward necessary repair-work on our pipe organ. Rubio’s is located at 308 Westwood Plaza #1.

Blood Drive on Tuesday 10/16

We’ve teamed up with Beta Theta Qi for a blood drive on Tuesday, October 16th. So, if you can, please stop by the blood donation centers either on campus (in Ackerman) or on Gayley and give blood. If you let them know it’s being done as part of the University Lutheran Chapel blood drive, we can accumulate “points” that can be used toward things like a dinner party, or allow us to give even more to charity. If you can’t donate, try asking a friend to pretty-please donate? Spreading the word about blood donation is as important as giving blood. Let’s save some lives, any way we can!
